THE ULTIMATE BRIXTON SUMMER BUCKET LIST
Summer doesn’t need a plane ticket or a packed itinerary. Sometimes, the best days are the ones spent discovering somewhere new, trying something unexpected and staying out a little longer than planned.
This summer, we’ve put together the ultimate Brixton Village bucket list. From celebrating Caribbean heritage at the heart of our community to dancing your way into Carnival season, here are the must-do experiences to tick off before summer comes to an end.

GET CARNIVAL READY
The countdown to Carnival starts long before the Bank Holiday weekend, and this August, Brixton Village is celebrating 60 years of Notting Hill Carnival with the people who have helped tell its story.
Carnival of Resistance Book Launch
On Thursday, 20th August, join us in Market Row for the launch of Carnival of Resistance, a new book by photographer Wayne Campbell and visual activist Wayne Crichlow. As the official photographer for this year’s Notting Hill Carnival, Wayne Campbell has spent years documenting the people, culture and community at the heart of the celebration. Expect readings from contributors, poetry, live music from Handson Family and the chance to explore the accompanying exhibition at Unit 23, Market Row, showcasing the stories and photographs behind the project.
📍Market Row, 19:00 – 23:00
Carnival of Resistance Market Row Takeover
Join the Village on Saturday 22 August, when the celebrations continue as Market Row comes alive with the sounds of Carnival. Dendê Nation returns with their reggae choir, steel pan players and carnival dancers in vibrant costumes, while Just Vibez brings the energy with DJs, music and dancing throughout the evening. It’s a chance to experience the spirit of Carnival before the parade even begins.

Carnival Bank Holiday Weekend
The Bank Holiday weekend turns the energy up another level, as The Courtyard transforms for a full Carnival takeover on Saturday 29th August.
Start the afternoon at the Family Fête, where little ones can get involved with carnival-inspired crafts, from designing colourful headpieces to decorating Caribbean-themed bags and taking part in creative activities for all ages.
As the sun goes down, the party turns up. Just Vibez takes over with the Big People Party — a Carnival block party filled with DJs, dancing and the unmistakable energy that makes Carnival season so special. Come for the family fun, stay for the celebrations, and experience 60 years of Carnival right here in Brixton Village.

CELEBRATE JAMAICAN INDEPENDENCE

For generations, Jamaican communities have helped shape Brixton into the place we know today. That story lives on in Brixton Village, where some of our longest-standing traders continue to share family recipes, warm welcomes and a real sense of home.
Mark Jamaican Independence Day on 6th August by spending the day with the traders who have become part of the fabric of the Village. Start with one of South London’s favourite Jamaican patties from Stafford’s Healthy Eaters, before settling in at Etta’s Seafood Kitchen, where generous seafood platters and family recipes have welcomed visitors for years. Browse seasonal Jamaican fruit and vegetables at Esme’s Organics, a Brixton Village trader since 2002, then meet June Daley, founder of Miss Jamaica UK, in her carefully curated vintage shop. Round off your visit at Lion Vibes, one of London’s longest-running reggae record shops and a cornerstone of Brixton’s music heritage.
Fancy staying a little longer? Share modern Caribbean comfort food at All Roads, or discover Uptown Yardie, whose garments carry reggae culture in every stitch. There’s no better place to celebrate Jamaican heritage than among the communities and traders who continue to keep its spirit alive.

EXPERIENCE THE RHYTHM OF AFRO-BRAZILIAN CULTURE
Heritage and culture have always been at the heart of Brixton Village, and this summer, Dendê Nation keeps that spirit alive. Through Afro-Brazilian music, dance and interactive performances, they’ll fill the Village with energy, bringing people together to celebrate community, creativity and culture. Whether you’re joining in or simply soaking up the atmosphere, it’s a summer experience not to miss.
