MARKET ROW IS EVOLVING.
EXCITING THINGS ARE COMING TO MARKET ROW... GET TO KNOW THE OTHER SIDE OF BRIXTON VILLAGE.
In December 2023, Brixton Village will start unveiling its exciting renovations to Market Row. This is the latest evolution in the Village’s long history as a breeding ground for success, following the birth of popular London brands such as Honest Burgers, Franco Manca, Chishuru, and Okan. We’ll be breathing fresh life into this section of Market Row, introducing a few exciting new traders alongside some careful and considered restorations of the grade II listed building. And our much-loved, long-standing traders who have enjoyed success over decades here – such as Healthy Eaters, Esme’s, and May Foods – will still be here.
We can’t wait to show visitors what’s been going on behind the scenes, but until the hoarding is ready to come down, we’d like to introduce you to the traders who will be joining our Market Row lineup. And don’t forget to sign up to our newsletter so you can be the first to know when we relaunch – we’ll be sharing exclusive offers from traders to our subscriber list to celebrate.
Introducing... The Black Farmer
The Black Farmer will open its first permanent retail site in Brixton Village, London, in mid-December 2023. Taking the form of a farmshop that mixes urban accessibility with rural charm, the farmshop will offer high-quality produce, ready-to-eat meals, food on the go, gifts, and a café bar. The Black Farmer was founded by Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones MBE and has gone on to become a leading brand for both its product quality and its activism in the agricultural space.
Opening in Brixton Village’s historic Market Row, the 5,000 sq ft store will stock The Black Farmer range as well as showcasing brands from Emmanuel-Jones’ initiative The Hatchery; an incubator hub for startups and up-and-coming food brands that offer quality produce and mission-focused entrepreneurs.
Renowned for his commitment to sustainable agriculture and community empowerment, Wilfred is on a mission to revolutionise urban retail, starting with his first bricks and mortar retail space in Market Row, Brixton Village. The choice to open in Brixton represents a profound connection to his roots as part of the Windrush generation, and The Black Farmer Farmshop is set to become a mainstay in the epicentre of London’s culinary diversity.
Learn more about The Black Farmer and his farmshop and sign up to his newsletter to receive exclusive VIP access to his pre-launch December 11th-14th.
WELCOME BACK... RUBEN'S REUBENS
We’re really excited to be welcoming Ruben back to Market Row. Ruben’s got a long history here – one of his first jobs was working in a pizzeria in the Village and he then went on to win our Brixton Kitchen competition back in 2019!
Lockdown saw Ruben smoking meats and fish in his back garden and selling it to hungry neighbours, before launching his business Ruben’s Reubens: serving up his classic Reubens sandwiches alongside lots of smoked BBQ specials and snacks. He’s been taking London by storm and he’s about to make waves in Market Row – starting a three-month residency here in November.
Paying homage to his Polish-Jewish roots, Ruben’s Reubens was born in the garden of his parents’ Brixton home. He’s been recognised by Code Hospitality as one of their 30 under 30 rising stars to watch, made sandwiches at Meatopia 2022 and Delli.Market, and been part of several pop-ups, festivals, and events across London.
Give Ruben a follow on Instagram to get regular updates on his Market Row pop up and how you can book a table. NOT to be missed!
A Market Row FLAVOUR FIESTA
The flavour fiesta that is Club Mexicana opened in September, providing Brixton with mouthwatering vegan tacos and other Mexican favourites. Founder Meriel’s mission began in 2013 when she noticed the lack of vegan restaurants in London. Frustrated, she founded Club Mexicana – determined to introduce vegan food to Londoners and win over the non-believers. Menu highlights include Cheeseburger Tacos, Buffalo Mushroom Taco, BBQ Short ‘Rib’ Burrito, Slow Cooked Beans and so much more! To get involved in all the plant-based goodness, head on over to Market Row.
HELLO LITTLE SISTER
Peckham’s favourite secondhand vintage store Little Sister will be joining the Market Row lineup opposite The Black Farmer. Little Sister got its start over in Peckham’s Holdron’s Arcade and the legendary shop currently operates out of Market Peckham. Market Row will house its second store.
Expert style selector and South-London local Nicola Brierley is the one-woman powerhouse behind Little Sister and her choices are always unconstrained by themes, decades, or genders – one day you might find a 1920s dress, another a 00s designer jumper. There’s always something for everyone and you can expect to find the same variety when Little Sister opens its doors in Brixton Village.
Follow Little Sister’s journey from Peckham to Brixton on Instagram and get a flavour of the ‘fits you’ll be able to find on Market Row soon…!
